On Saturday, April 14, Gillian Dugas on behalf of Rotary Club of Etobicoke and Dr. Robert Sexton on behalf of Rotary Club of Toronto West each presented a cheque for $1,000 to Carlos Rastidas, Conductor of POP Orchestra. Each bursary will support a promising young student and recent graduate of the Royal Conservatory of Music for the performance season 2018/19. Awards are made annually based on the recommendation of the student's teachers and examiners at the Conservatory. The POP Orchestra hopes to ignite the potential in youth to bring high quality music to their community. The program included music from Star Wars, E.T., The King's Speech, Space Odyssey 101, Jurassic Park and Star Trek. Humber Valley United Church was full in spite of the challenging weather and the orchestra received a much deserved standing ovation. In the orchestra were several music teachers from Etobicoke schools as well as violinist Rotarian Paul Collier. Also POP provides a wonderful opportunity to young musicians from different local high schools to rehearse for 4 weeks with the orchestra and play with them in a concert. Last night's performance had 5 violinists from Martingrove High School.
